India batters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli made an expensive mix-up on Day 2 of the fourth Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Friday. The day started with India losing Rohit Sharma cheaply after the Indian captain moved back to the top of the order. KL Rahul then shared a solid 43-run partnership with Jaiswal for the second wicket before being dismissed. Kohli joined Jaiswal, and the pair added 102 runs for the third wicket before disaster struck.

Jaiswal played a delivery from Scott Boland towards mid-on, where Pat Cummins was fielding, and immediately called for a single. Kohli, however, looked back at Cummins instead of responding to Jaiswal’s call.

After taking a step forward, he turned away, choosing not to take the run. By then, Jaiswal had already committed and was halfway down the pitch, leaving him no chance to return as he was run out in a costly mix-up.

It was a big blow for India, occurring just 20 minutes before stumps. Jaiswal and Kohli had steadied the innings, recovering from a shaky 51/2 to 153/2. The young left-hander was in excellent form, playing one of his best innings of the series.

He scored 82 off 117 balls, including 11 boundaries and a six. Jaiswal handled the new ball confidently and seamlessly adapted to Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Marsh. Missing out on a century after such a brilliant knock was surely a disappointing moment for him.

Manjrekar took a strong stance, insisting that Kohli should have taken responsibility for the run. He highlighted that Jaiswal was at the danger end, and it was Kohli's call to accept or decline the single.

Manjrekar argued that the ball wasn’t traveling quickly enough for Kohli to be run out and that he could have easily made it to the other end.

He criticized Kohli’s hesitation, calling it a “schoolboy error” for the senior batsman to glance back and ultimately deny the run. "The ball was going slow, I don’t think Kohli would’ve been run out. It was Jaiswal's call. Maybe it was a risky run, but Jaiswal was at the danger end, not Kohli," Manjrekar said, adding that if Jaiswal had made the wrong call, he would have been out at the non-striker's end.

However, Irfan Pathan strongly disagreed with Manjrekar's view, defending Kohli's decision. He argued that the rapid movement of the ball towards the fielder, Pat Cummins, likely made Kohli hesitate about taking the single. "Kohli wasn't confident about the run because he saw how fast the ball was traveling," Pathan explained.

The debate quickly grew intensecrazywin, with the two former cricketers speaking over each other, leading Manjrekar to snap, "If you don’t want to let me talk, it’s alright." Manjrekar then made a sharp remark, joking that Pathan's new "interpretation" of whether a run was possible should be added to the coaching manual.
