COTABATO CITYtamabet, Philippines — A public school teacher and her son died after their motorcycle was hit by a van in Mlang, Cotabato on Monday.

Jenelyn Damcel, 38, died while being treated in a hospital, while her son, Sean Andrew, 13, died at the scene of the accident.

According to House Resolution 2050, lawmakers became aware of the issue after receiving a complaint from Mary Jane Rodrigo-Hallasgo and Amatorio Rodrigo, members of the Manobo Tribe, saying that Philsaga has been denying the indigenous peoples’ rights to their ancestral land in Bunawan.

He was also found guilty of malversation under Article 217 of the Revised Penal Code, for which he received a sentence of reclusion perpetua—20 to 40 years imprisonment—and a fine of P393 million, the amount embezzled.

The victims were on their way to school when they were hit by the van.

The van drivertamabet, whose identity was not immediately known, was taken to the police station for questioning.
